After the second day of competition at the Ball State Invitational, three members of the Redbird mens tennis team will be vying for championships in their respective flights.
Djordje Uskokvic, B flight, Andy Martin, C flight, and Marek Blaskovic, who joined with a player from Northern Illinois in doubles competition, will all challenge for a championship on Sunday.
The Redbirds performed well individually early on Saturday, as the team earned 5 out of 7 singles wins in the morning. The afternoon was not as kind to the Redbirds, however, as only Uskokvic (6-0; 6;1) and Martin (6-4; 6-4) would advance from the semifinals to the finals on Sunday.
Jason Smit bowed out to Ikaika Jobe of St. Louis (2-6;2-6) in the semifinal Saturday afternoon in the A flight as did Ciaran Foley to Jusitn Kates of Western Michigan (3-6;1-6) in the B flight.
In doubles competition Marek Blaskovic and Ryan Schnack, of Northern Illinois, advanced (8-5) to the C flight finals to be played Sunday morning.
The rest of the doubles competitors did not fair as well, with Ben Cappuccitti and Duordje Uskokovic losing (4-8) in the B flight, Ben Pettinari and Jason Smit (1-8) in the A flight, and the team of Ciaran Foley and Andy Martin (5-8) of the C flight losing before the semifinal round.
Coach Greg Kennett is very pleased with his teams performance so far in the tournament.
The team had a great first day, and we fought very hard today and played very well, said Kennett. We have noticed some team weaknesses, but we are happy so far.
