Redbird Softball "Play Ball" in Intrasquad Scrimmage

Illinois State softball had their first chance to play ball in a game-type situation as the Redbirds competed in an intrasquad scrimmage Sunday afternoon at the Redbird Softball Complex. The Redbirds were divided among two teams, Red and White, and played two 7-inning games. There were no official scores or statistics, but head coach Melinda Fischer said the afternoon accomplished what it was meant to accomplish. We wanted to see a lot of play and see how the team responded to the game-type situations, said Fischer. Unofficially the White team won the first game 4-3, and the second game ended in a tie, 3-3. Fischer was pleased with the way both teams fought hard to come back at the end of each game. There are some things that we have not covered yet, there were some unnecessary errors and we need to pick it up offensively, said Fischer. But I am happy with the way the newcomers played, especially Sheila (Emms), who did well for her first time pitching from 43-feet. The Redbirds will host the Illinois State Fall Classic at the Redbird Softball Complex Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 7 and 8. Competing teams will include the Redbirds, Indiana State, Illinois Central College and St. Xavier.
