Tough Season Opener Slated for Redbird Womens Tennis

The spring season will be challenging for the Illinois State womens tennis team at the Redbirds open up play this Saturday at #58 Furman and then face #3 Georgia, Sunday, in Greenville, SC. Liina Suurvarik will be looked upon to lead the Redbirds against their nationally-ranked opponents this weekend after winning the Milwaukee Tennis Classic on January 11th. Suurvarik will play the #1 ranked women tennis player in the country, Agata Cioroch of Georgia, on Sunday. Head coach Chris Hoover is excited to get out and start competing this spring, to see what level of play his student-athletes are going to be at for the start of the season. We are playing two very solid teams in Furman and Georgia, said Hoover. It will be a good test to see where the girls are at. About a third of the girls seem to be ready, another third seem to be on the brink of getting the season started and the other third seem to need more work before the season gets started. Saturdays match against Furman begins at 1 p.m. while the Redbirds wrap-up the weekend with an 11 a.m. match with Georgia on Sunday. -- ## --
