A goal by Joyce Kleinheinz in double overtime gave the Illinois State womens soccer team a conference opener victory on the road against Northern Iowa. The Birds now own a road record of 2-3-1 and a conference record of 1-0.
It was a great road win, especially for the first game of the conference, Head coach Pete Kowall said. We really pushed Joyce forward, and I think that helped a lot.
Although Kleinheinz usually plays defender, Kowall moved her forward leading to her first collegiate goal and the game winning score with just four minutes left in double overtime.
Junior Lauren Kahlenbeck recorded her first assist in the season on Kleinheinzs goal.
The Redbirds have yet to fall to the Northern Iowa Panthers. In the four meetings Northern Iowa has failed to score a goal.
The Redbirds continue action on Oct. 3 at 3:30 against Central Michigan University at Adelaide Field in Normal, Ill.
