Birds Sit In Sixth After Day One

The Illinois State womens golf team sits in sixth place after 36 holes of the Marilynn Smith Sunflower Invite in Manhattan, Kan. The Redbirds carded a two round total of 636 (317,319) and remain only eight shots out of the top five. Samantha Richdale led the Birds in scoring again with a 146 (72,74). Richdale is the individual leader after two rounds and bested Karen Quintelier of host Kansas State by one stroke. Nasty weather conditions for the second round led to higher scores across the board, but the Birds managed to move up a few sports during the afternoon. Head coach Ray Kralis feels that the team is in a good spot to move up in the final found. We didnt get the team effort in the morning and left Samantha stranded, Kralis said. Even with the bad weather this afternoon we found a way to move up and are in good position to make a run at the leaders tomorrow. Kansas State leads the invite with a 614 (302,312). Southern Methodist is only four shots off of the lead, while Nebraska, Arkansas-Little Rock and Kansas round out the top five. Following the sixth place Birds are Michigan, Iowa, North Texas, Wichita State, UMKC, and Creighton. Kralis would like to see another solid round to conclude the fall season. Obviously we want to finish well and conclude the fall season on a good note, Kralis said. We have the right attitude and I hope we finish strong. The Sunflower Invite concludes Tuesday with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start.
