Tough Opening Round For 'Birds at ITA All-American

Guillermo Gomezs bid to win tournaments on back to back weekends for the Illinois State mens tennnis team was ended Friday afternoon, as Thomas Bieri of Oregon beat Gomez in straight sets 6-3; 6-1 in the opening round of the Icy Hot ITA All-American tournament, in Chattanooga, Tenn. Gomez fellow Redbirds did not fair well either, as not a sole Redbird could advance past the first round of the singles competition. In eight singles matches the Birds were only able to pick up two sets total on the afternoon. Djordje Uskokovicwas able to win the second set against Missouri Valley Conference opponent Goran Vagakliga, of Wichita State, but eventually fell, 6-4; 4-6; 6-3. The Birds hope to change thier luck for the doubles competition, which begins Saturday morning. The Valley All-Conference tandem of Uskokovic and Ben Pettinari will look to improve on the teams singles performance when they face off against Fernando Fieri and Federico Ochoa of East Tennessee State at 12:30 a.m., at the Champions Club, in Chattanooga Tenn. -- ## --
