Illinois State junior Trey Guidry came off the bench to guide the Redbirds to a 87-70 victory over Florida A&M in the season opener and for his efforts was recognized by the conference office by being named the State Farm/Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Week.
The Baton Rouge, La., native tossed in a game-high 24 points to lead the Birds past the preseason favorites in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference.
Head coach Porter Moser was pleased with Guidrys honor and commended the 6-foot-2 guard on his well-balanced play against the Rattlers.
I have really been talking to Trey about being more complete, Moser said. We know he can score, but I think he showed some defensive intensity and he did well against the press. I think Trey is making more plays that arent scoring plays and I think that is a big step in making Trey a more complete player.
Guidry scored 12 points from behind the 3-point arch on 4-of-6 shooting, but he also took two charges defensively. Guidry recorded his other 12 points from the free throw line where he matched Illinois States Redbird Arena record for most made free throws in the facility.
Guidry and the Redbirds return to action on Wednesday, November 26 when Illinois State travels to DeKalb, Ill., to take on Northern Illinois. Tip off is 7:05 p.m.
