Boyce, Kabbes Earn Valley Scholar-Athlete Recognition

In addition to being the Prairie Farms Scholar-Athlete of the Week in the Missouri Valley, Illinois State University senior middle blocker Staci Boyce earned academic recognition as a member of the 2003 Missouri Valley Conference Volleyball Scholar-Athlete team. Emily Kabbes, who plays opposite Boyce in the Redbird lineup, earned honorable mention. Boyce, a math major, has a 3.47 cumulative grade point average. She also recently became the first Illinois State player to register 1,000 career points (kills plus digs plus blocking statistics). Kabbes, a sophomore elementary education major with a 3.42 GPA, has combined with Boyce to give the Redbirds a team hitting percentage above .300 during its current 7-match winning streak--longest current in the Missouri Valley. A native of Lockport, Boyce is a six-time memberof Illinois States AFNI Honor Roll. She was one of 16 players elected to the Valley Scholar-Athlete team. Kabbes, a Normal native and Bloomington Central Catholic High School graduate, was one of seven honorable mention selections. Boyce and Kabbes will lead an 18-13 Redbird team and its seven-match win streak into Fridays 12:30 p.m. match in the State Farm-Missouri Valley Conference Volleyball Tournament against Indiana State at Hammons Student Center in Springfield, Mo.v
