Illinois State began the second day of competition at the Fun and Sun Classic in Miami, Fla., with a 1-0 loss to No. 17 Georgia.
Both teams remained scoreless until the bottom of the sixth when Georgias Courtney Knight hit a single to center field and later advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. She scored as a result of teammate Michelle Greens single hit, who then advanced to second on a throw, but was left on base.
In the top of the seventh, the Birds failed to score as Kate Stake was out on a fly to left field, Corey Harris struck out swinging and Melissa Baker also was out on a fly to left field.
Harris (1-1), who recorded her first loss of the season, gave up five hits, one run and two walks from the circle.
The Redbirds, now 1-2 overall, will be back in action tonight at 6:30 p.m. (EST) as they face the winner of the Kentucky and Florida International game, which started at 1:30 p.m. The tournament concludes tomorrow with a consolation game at 10:30 a.m. and a 1 p.m. championship game.
