Redbirds Perfect as They Defeat Saint Louis 7-0

Liina Suurvarik defeated Saint Louis Melisa Lemus, 6-3, 6-2, in the No. 1 position, to help Illinois State defeat the Billikens, 7-0 today at the Sunset Tennis Club in Saint Louis, Mo. The Redbirds (2-4) made it a clean sweep of Saint Louis (3-3) as the Birds would not lose a single set in singles or doubles play. Playing in the No. 2 position, Alesia Mikalayvea brought her over-all record on the year up to .500 with a win over Vicki Zielinski, 6-0, 6-2. Emily Sechaud won a hard fought match against Amy OHandley in the No. 3 spot, 6-2, 7-6. Liz Vingier won the No. 3 position match over Saint Louis Melissa Cutler, 6-1, 6-0. Laura Gravino dominated the No. 4 spot, winning 6-0, 6-0 over Erin Kersten, and Shelby Lipson was victorious in the No. 5 spot over Kristen Doyle, 6-2, 6-0. Suurvarik and Mikalyvea took their #34 doubles ranking up against Lemus and Zeilinski in No. 1 doubles action, and won 8-3. Bingier and Lipson defeated Cutler and OHandley in the No. 2 doubles spot, 8-3, and Hoffman and Gravino finished the perfect day for the Birds with a win in the No. 3 doubles position over Kersten and Doyle, 8-3. The next time the Redbirds will take to action they will be in paradise, as they will face Brigham Young University (Hawaii) in Honolulu, Hawaii, March 8, at 2 p.m. -- ## --
