Bird Golfers Head South for Roadrunner Tournament

The Illinois State mens golf team will travel to San Antonio, TX, February 24-25 for the Roadrunner Intercollegiate Invitational. The University of Texas-San Antonio will host the 15 team event. Juniors Brian Anderson, Walter Brown and Denny Bull, as well as sophomore Kyle Vasel and freshman Chris Eddy will be making the trip south to compete for the Redbirds. Head coach Harland Kilborn hopes his squad can perform well in spite of the fact that this will only be their second time playing outdoors. Our trip to Florida was a good preparation for San Antonio, said Kilborn. Without Florida I would say wed be far behind. But I think the guys got a lot accomplished and got a lot of confidence, so hopefully we can continue with that. This will still only be our second time out, but at least we kind of got some of the rust knocked off. The field of competitors includes teams from Arkansas, Arkansas-Little Rock, Baylor, German National Team, Iowa State, Kansas State, Louisiana-Lafayette, North Texas, Northern Iowa, Rice, Stephen F. Austin, Texas Tech, UTSA and Wichita State. According to Kilborn the participating teams should make for some tough competition. With most of the teams competing being southern schools weve got our work cut out for u s, said Kilborn. There will be a few teams that we would like to be very competitive with, as far as teams within our district. This being our first major tournament of the year were just trying to get some confidence and really build toward the end of the year. San Antonio will be a great starting point for us. The tournament is slated to take place at the par 72 Oak Hills Country Club, the former home of the Texas Open. The Redbirds will take the course February 24 for their first two rounds of competition and finish up February 25 with round three.
