Junior Brian Anderson led the way for the Illinois State mens golf team in competition at the UTSA Invitational. Anderson finished day one of the competition with a 78, good enough for a tie at 30th in cold and rainy conditions at the Oak Hills Country Club.
The Redbirds turned in individual scores with only a one stroke difference separating each. Junior Walter Brown and sophomore Kyle Vasel each ended the day in a tie for 38th-place with a total of 79 strokes. Junior Denny Bull finished the day with an 80, good enough for a tie at 47th, while freshman Chris Eddy rounded out the Redbird squad in a tie at 51st and a score of 81.
As a team the Redbirds finished out the day in a tie for 11th-place with Louisiana-LaFayette out of 15 teams. The Birds posted a team total of 316 strokes.
Texas Tech University sits in first place after day one with a team score of 300 and two of its competitors in the top five individual finishers. Texas barely edged out the University of Arkansas for the first place spot, which posted a team score of 302, good enough for second place. In a tie for the third place spot were the University of North Texas and Kansas State University with a score of 305, followed by Iowa State University rounding out the top five with a day one score of 307.
Zach Atkinson of the University of North Texas holds the first-place individual spot after posting an even par score of 72.
The tournament, which has been shortened to two rounds (36 holes) due to inclement weather conditions will conclude Tuesday at 9 a.m.
