After cancelling round two Monday, the remaining round of the UTSA Invitational was cut as well due to icy conditions and freezing temperatures. The 18 holes the Redbirds and the rest of the field were able to play Monday will count as the final score for this years competition.
Junior Brian Anderson led the way for the Illinois State mens golf team with a tie at 30th, and a score of 78. Junior Walter Brown and sophomore Kyle Vasel followed close behind, each scoring a total of 79 to end the tournament in a tie for 38th. Junior Denny Bull finished the day with an 80, good enough for a tie at 47th, while freshman Chris Eddy rounded out the Redbird five in a tie at 51st with a score of 81.
As a team the Birds finished the one-round tournament in a tie for 11th-place with Louisiana-LaFayette, as both teams posted a score of 316.
Texas Tech University claimed first-place honors in the team competition, with a score of 300, and two of its individual competitors in the top five. The University of Arkansas placed second with a 302, and finishing in a tie for third were the University of North Texas and Kansas State with a score of 305. Rounding out the top five teams was Iowa State University, finishing with 307 strokes.
Zach Atkinson of the University of North Texas claimed medalist honors for the tourney after posting an even par score of 72.
The Redbirds return to competitive golf action March 24-25 when they head to Turlock, Cal. for the Stevenson Ranch Invitational.
