Liina Suurvarik of the Illinois State womens tennis team has been selected as the female Prairie Farms/Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Week for the period of February 17-23. She also received this honor on October 11, 2002.
Suurvarik, a senior from Tallin, Estonia, led the Redbirds to a 7-0 shutout over Saint Louis, when she defeated the Billikens Melisa Lemus, 6-3, 6-2, in the No. 1 sinlges position on Feb. 21. She paired with Alesia Mikalyvea to defeat the Saint Louis duo of Lemus and Zeilinski in No. 1 doubles action, 8-3. Suurvarik posts a 3.89 cumulative grade-point average in international business.
To qualify for the Prairie Farms/ Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Week honors, student-athletes must carry a cumulative grade-point average of 3.00, completed at least one academic year at a Valley institution and must be at least a sophomore in academic standing. In addition to the academic qualifications, student-athletes are evaluated on their athletic performance for a one-week period.
