We felt the kids performed very well, head coach Elvis Forde said. We missed a couple of opportunities to take advantage but when I look at people like Andrea Mosher in the 400 and Cherise Devers in the 200, both freshman, and then Lauren Maul who has a few years here with us, plus the relays, we had some strong points.
As tough as it may seem, it was a gutty performance by Jen Klostermann who sacrificed her chance at being a champion in the 800 meters to be a part of the relay and help win points for our team, Forde added. It is things like that that makes me proud of the teams today. We struggled in some areas but health is what he need and some people were not healthy.
You cant take anything away from SMS. They are an outstanding team and worked hard here this weekend. It is just a matter of our kids realizing that in order to be a championship team, hard work is necessary for success.
On the mens side, we are not as deep in the men as we would like to be but a challenge with me taking the job here is trying to rebuild the program. So we have some work there but hopefully in the summer we can get them all to full strength. Hopefully we can get the kids to believe that they are champions and we hope to take away from this championship what it takes to be champions. I think it is now a focus on the outdoor season and what we can do to improve for that season as well.
The meet concluded the indoor season for Illinois State. The Redbirds open their outdoor season March 21-22 at the Alabama Relays in Tuscaloosa, Ala.
