Sophomore Kyle Vasel fired a three-under-par 70 in the second round to pace the Illinois State men's golf team to third place after 36 holes at the Grandeeza Intercollegiate at Estero, Fla.
The Redbirds' team score of 592 was well off the pace of two squads from Florida Gulf Coast. FGCU's No. 2 team was at 560 and its No. 1 squad was at 567 after 36 holes at The Club at Grandeeza.
Vasel parred the first 18 before shooting his 70 for the second round as Illinois State trimmed 24 strokes from its team score for the initial 18. Thirteen of those 24 strokes of improvement came off the score of Walter Brown who joined Vasel at 70 for the second 18 after shooting an 83 for the opening round. Dustin Edwards came in with a 71 to give the Birds three players below par.
Individually, Vasel was No. 7--six strokes behind co-leaders Ryan Michals and Jake Pasch of the FGSU No. 2 team--with Edwards tied for 15th at 149, Brown tied for No. 23 at 153. Brian Anderson and Chris Eddy filled out the five-player Redbird team with 154 each.
Kris Wildenradt, competing as an individual for Illinois State, matched Edwards' two-round total of 149.
