Junior Brian Anderson led the way for the Illinois State mens golf team, finishing day one in a tie for third place at the Stevinson Ranch Invitational in Stevenson, Cal. Anderson shot a 72 in round one, followed by a 70 in round two to finish just two strokes behind the current leader.
Junior Walter Brown was the next highest Redbird finisher, ending the day in a tie for 49th-place. Brown turned in a two-round total of 153 (76-77) strokes. Following Brown was junior Denny Bull who finished in a tie for 54th after shooting a total of 154 (73-81) strokes in the two rounds played so far. Sophomore Kyle Vasel carded a 155 (82-73) to finish the day in a tie at 58th, followed by Chris Eddy who rounded out the five-man roster with a finish in 73rd place after shooting an 88 in the first round, and a 72 in the second.
As a team the Redbirds finished day one action tied for 11th-place out of 14 teams. The Birds posted a team total of 595 (303-292) strokes.
In team competition Kansas State holds first place heading into the final round, after shooting a 573 (286-287). Valley foe Wichita State currently sits in second place with a score of 579 (286-293). Rounding out the day one top three is Pacific with scores of 296 and 288 for a total of 584.
Matt Hansen, of Pacific, currently sits in first place after shooting a pair of 70s (140). His closest challenger Derek Butts of Drake University, finished just one stroke behind after carding a 72 in round one and a 69 (141) in round two.
The final 18 holes of the tournament will be played Tuesday to end the competition and crown the winners.
