Spring Practice #5: Enthusiasm Remains High for Redbird Football

After three days off and a string of poor weather, the Illinois State football team was excited to return to spring drills Thursday with the sun shining as the Redbirds completed day five of spring practice at Hancock Stadium. Although head coach Denver Johnson and his crew had no control over mother nature, he knew it had a hand in how well the practice went. It was just great to be out here today. We had great weather, Johnson said. That always picks everyones spirits up particularly after a string of bad stuff the past week. The attitudes remain exemplary and they (the team) are running around out here acting like they are having fun playing ball. Three Redbirds on the offense made an impact on todays drills according to Johnson while transfer Antwan Oliver had a quarterback pick late in the drills and returned it for approximately a 60-yard touchdown. Antwan really showed up today and I was very pleased with his play toward the end of practice, Johnson said. Mike (Souza) had a great day doing some nice things in the pocket while Demetrus Johnson showed some nice moves out there. Dwayne Smith also had a good day. Overall I am really pleased, Johnson said. I am concerned about our depth in a couple of spots but we have help coming in the fall. If they just keep working this hard now, we are going to continue to have a lot of fun coaching them. We will have a good chance at being a competitive club. The team continues practice Friday at 3:30 p.m. at Hancock Stadium in full pads.
