Heading into a full weekend of football starting on Saturday morning followed by the first scrimmage of the spring on Sunday, the Illinois State football team wrapped up the week with a full practice wearing full pads at Hancock Stadium Friday evening.
Whenever you put on full pads, you naturally get more competitive when you step on the field, Johnson said. It gets the adrenaline and testosterone flowing and I think that was evident out here today.
We had another strong practice and the usual suspects showed up. Ray (Robinson), Boomer (Grigsby) and Mike (Souza) continue to lead this team and show up while Niall Campbell did some great things for us today.
When the buzzer sounded after 21, 5-minute periods were over, the team continued practice with sprints, but Johnson said he already saw a lot of milage out of the backs which was highlighted by a 20-plus yard scamper by running back Shar-ron Edwards.
We sure got a lot of milage out of the backs today, Johnson said. Harry Lattimore, Tristan Davis and Demetrus Johnson all did well and ran the ball and I continue to be pleased with that area and seeing them improve is encouraging.
On the defensive side, linebacker Adam Redenius had an interception.
I am pleased with another practice and we continue to make progress in all areas, Johnson said. I am impressed with the attitudes and work habit of this team as we continue to go about our business.
The Redbirds will take care of more business Saturday with a 10 a.m. practice.
