In the last home meet of the season, the seniors of the Illinois State womens tennis team did not drop a set to Creighton in a 7-0 victory. The win gives the Birds its seventh straight win and keeps them undefeated in the Missouri Valley Conference with a 6-0 record, and 12-7 overall.
In singles play, senior Alesia Mikalayeva topped Deidre Senders in the No. 2 position 6-4, 6-0. In the No. 5 spot, senior Alana Hoffman ousted Shannon Whelan 6-2, 6-0. The other senior to pick up a victory, Shelby Lipson, downed Molly Green 6-3, 6-1, in the No. 6 spot. Head coach Chris Hoover was glad that his seniors were able to set the stage for the rest of the team.
The seniors stepped up big today and played good tennis, Hoover said. With Liz down due to injury Alana stepped up and played good tennis through the day.
In doubles, the dynamic duo of Mikalayeva and Liina Suurvarik were able to drop Senders and Molly Green, 8-0, in No. 1 doubles. The doubles victory was Suurvariks 78th for her career, which ties her for second and puts her 13 behind her playing partner Mikalayeva on the Redbirds all-time doubles victory list.
The Redbirds will be looking to make it eight straight as they travel down I-74 to take on Bradley, April 16, at 5 p.m.
