Junior Brian Anderson led the Illinois State University mens golf team at the Indian Classic, hosted by Arkansas State, shooting a 149 (73-76) in two rounds. Anderson ended the day placed in a tie for 37th, with one round remaining in the tourney.
Sophomore Kyle Vasel carded a 152 (77-75) to place in a tie for 57th, while junior Walter Brown (80-77) and freshman Chris Eddy (79-78) ended the day in a tie for 76th after each shot a two-round score of 157. Freshman Kurt Sroka rounded out the traveling five carding a 164 (84-80) and finishing in a tie for 90th.
As a team the Birds ended the day in 18th-place after recording a two-round score of 615 (309-306).
The University of North Texas sits in a tie with Arkansas-Little Rock for first-place team honors after each carded a 575 during day one. The University of Louisville holds third with a 584 (295-289) while the University of Nebraska sits one stroke behind in fourth with a score of 585 (293-292). Arkansas State (292-296), Rice (292-296) and Iowa State (287-301) all finished the day in a tie for fifth with a score of 588.
Gareth Maybin (69-70) of Southern Alabama sits in a tie for first with Billy Zihala (70-69) of Arkansas-Little Rock after each recorded a day one score of 139.
Golf action resumes Tuesday with the final 18 holes of the tournament.
