Coming off an 11-0 victory over Evansville Sunday at Redbird Field, the Illinois State baseball team is hoping to get a winning streak started when it heads to Macomb, Ill., Wednesday for a 3 p.m. non-conference match-up against the Leathernecks of Western Illinois at Vince Grady Field.
The Redbirds have not had consecutive wins since it won four in a row earlier this season from Saturday, March 1, at Murray State through Sunday, March 9, against Pennsylvania in Fresno, Calif.
WIth 10 straight road games on the horizon for the Birds, head coach Jim Brownlee justs wants to try and get his team healthy in order to concentrate on making a run for the Missouri Valley Conference postseason tournament (May 21-24).
This is an interesting week for us because we dont have any conference games (at Ball State this weekend) and some of our guys need to get healthy, said Brownlee. We have had to switch our line-up around quite a bit, because of injuries and once we get guys back, I think we will be alright.
We got a nice win Sunday, said Brownlee. Hopefully, we can carry that momentum into this road trip, because every game on the road is a challenge.
Illinois State is currently 10-19 overall and 4-11 in Valley play. Western Illinois comes into Wednesdays game with an 11-19 overall record. The Leathernecks have lost five of their last six games, but are coming off of a 13-1 home victory over Illinois College Sunday.
The Western Illinois game will not be available on WJBCs webcast. The next webcast will be available on Tuesday, April 22, when the Birds head to Champaign, Ill., to take on the Fighting Illini.
