Three Redbirds From Mens Tennis Named to Valley Scholar Athlete Team

Marek Blaskcovic, Ciaran Foley, and Ben Cappuccitti of the Illinois State mens tennis team were named to the Missouri Valley Scholar-Athlete Team Thursday, April 17, for their outstanding academic and athletic accomplishments this season. Blaskovic, Foley, and Cappuccitti were all named to the honorable mention team. Blaskovic, a senior finance major with a 3.13 GPA, adds the honor to a list of others that he has accumulated over the season. He was also the Mens Tennis Valley Player of the Week and Prairie Farms/ Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Week for the week of February 24, 2003. Blaskovic currently has a 16-12 singles record and is 14-8 in doubles competition. Foley, a senior marketing major with a 3.38 GPA, was also named Prairie Farms/ Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Week for the week of March 19, 2003. Foley has been outstanding in doubles competition during the spring season, teaming with Jason Smit to go 11-1 in doubles action. Cappuccitti, a economics major with a 3.00 GPA, has been playing at the No. 1 position for the Redbirds since March 21, and has lead the Birds to a 6-3 record since taking over the top spot. Sports information directors from each school in the Valley selected the first team and honorable mention team based on academic and athletic excellence. Athletes must be at least sophomores in academic standing, have a GPA of 3.00 or above, and participate in at least 75 percent of conference matches. --##--
