The Illinois State defense unveiled a new wrinkle Thursday, as the Redbirds began the third week of spring practice on a cool spring day at Hancock Stadium.
The Redbirds practiced for 21, five-minute periods and ended the work out with a short scrimmage session. During the head-to-head portion of practice, the Redbird defense slipped into an uncharacteristic three-man front.
We looked at a lot of different things today defensively, head coach Denver Johnson said. We put in a three-man front and some different coverages. We just wanted to take a look at (that formation) and see if we want to spend some more time on it in the fall.
The defense responded as Leon Kittrell and Cedric Jackson each intercepted passes and Montell Conner and William Rolle each posted sacks.
Mike Souza continued to show developing signs of a second-year quarterback, while transfer Demetrus Johnson busted another 30-plus yard run from his tailback position.
We wish the weather could make up its mind, but we continue to be impressed with the attitude of our guys, Johnson said. Souza is really doing some good things and Im really pleased with his progress.
The Birds return for a light practice on Friday at 3:30 p.m. With the second scrimmage scheduled for Saturday, the team will focus more on teaching and individual workouts Friday in shoulder pads and shorts.
NOTEBOOK:
Defensive end Ray Robinson missed the end of practice with a tight right hamstring and is listed day-to-day.
