Liina Suurvarik and Laura Gravino will look to extend the Illinois State womens tennis teams winning streak to nine and keep the team undefeated in conference play, when they travel on a two-meet road trip starting with Evansville, Saturday, and concluding with Southern Illinois on Sunday. The two meets wrap up the regular season for the Redbirds.
The Birds are currently first in the Missouri Valley Conference with a 7-0 record and 13-7 overall. Head coach Chris Hoover hopes his team can keep up the current streak and remain undefeated.
It is important that we are able to stay focused and finish off the season strong, Hoover said. It would be big for us if we are able to be the No. 1 seed going into the Valley tournament.
Suurvarik and Gravino are two Birds that are expected to lead the way. Suurvarik currently posts a 33-5 record and has 12 consecutive victories. Gravino holds a 21-6 singles record, and has only dropped one game in her last four outings. Both student-athletes were named first team Valley Scholar Athletes Thursday.
Saturdays match against Evansville starts at 3 p.m. and Sundays match against Southern Illinois starts at 10 a.m.
