'Birds Perfect in the Valley

With the weekend sweep the Illinois State womens tennis team took the Missouri Valley Conference regular season title with perfect 9-0 record and 15-7 overall. The Redbirds breezed by the Valley competition this weekend dropping Evansville Friday, 7-0, and downing Southern Illinois on Saturday, 5-2, for their 10th consecutive victory. The Birds last won the regular season title in 2001, and it is the 110th Missouri Valley Conference title for ISU since joining the conference in 1982. In singles, Liina Suurvarik leads the Birds with a 34-5 record, and stayed undefeated in the Valley with a record of 13-0. Laura Gravino has been playing spectacular tennis only dropping two games in her last six matches owning a 12-0 record in the Valley and 23-6 overall. The Redbirds have been duplicating the efforts in doubles with Suurvarik and Alesia Mikalayeva leading the way. The dynamic duo put together 26-7 record, and 11-1 in the Valley. Gravino and Alana Hoffman have been leading the way at No. 2 doubles posting a 10-8 overall record, and going 7-1 in the Valley. Birds have the No. 1 seed entering the Valley tournament that starts April 25 and goes to April 28. -- ## --
