After going undefeated in the Missouri Valley Conference, the Illinois State womens tennis team will play as the No. 1 seed in the Valley tournament on Friday, in Springfield, Mo. The Birds finished the season 9-0 in the Valley and 15-7 overall.
The Redbirds will take on the winner of the preliminary match between Northern Iowa and Evansville. The Birds dropped Northern Iowa, 6-1, April 11, and breezed by Evansville, 7-0, April 18.
The Birds will be led by Liina Suurvarik and Alesia Mikalayeva through the Valley tournament. Suurvarik and Mikalayeva were named to the Valley All-Conference team along with Laura Gravino. The Birds had two doubles teams named Valley All-Conference, Suurvarik and Mikalayeva at the No. 1 spot and Gravino and Alana Hoffman at No. 2 doubles.
Other Redbirds to receive accolades this season was head coach Chris Hoover, who took home Valley Coach of the Year honors and Emilie Sechaud who earned Valley Freshman of the Year honors.
