After one of the most impressive years for an Illinois State womens tennis player, Liina Suurvarik season came to an end when she fell to Fresno States Chloe Carlotti 6-4, 6-2, in the first round of the NCAA Singles Tournament Monday, at the Ring Tennis Complex, at Gainesville, Fla.
Suurvariks 37-6 record was only two wins shy of the single-season win mark for a Redbird of 39, held by Janelle Crabtree in 1995. For her career, the junior from Tallin, Estonia, has 98 singles victories, which is two short of matching the career victories list of 100, held by Jennifer Liepa.
Suurvarik was a main reason the Birds were able to post a perfect 9-0 record in the Missouri Valley Conference and capture the Valley tournament title. Her 11-0 record in conference play earned her second straight Valley All-Conference first team honors, and three Valley Player of the Week honors.
The stellar Suurvarik will play a major role for the Redbirds next season, as they will try and win their second straight Valley conference title.
