Student-athletes making their debut as a Redbird this season will be welcomed into the family during Illinois States third annual Walk of Champions to be held Sunday night at 7:30 p.m. on the ISU Quad.
During the ceremony, all first-year athletes, including freshmen and transfers, will walk the campus for a lesson on the history of ISU and its athletic department. Current ISU athletes will lead the way with torches, making stops at the Old Main Bell, Hovey Hall, Cook Hall, Hancock Stadium, Horton Field House and finally Redbird Arena where they will receive half of a medallion which states To This Emblem Well Be True. The other half will be given upon their graduation from ISU.
On hand for the festivities will be Interim President Dr. Al Bowman, Student Government Association President Ryan Meister, Assistant Director of Admissions Dr. Will Davis, Director of Athletics Perk Weisenburger, retired Senior Associate Athletics Director Dr. Linda Herman and former Redbird womens basketball coach Dr. Jill Hutchison.
Jane Fulton, assistant athletics director of academics and life skills, has been coordinating the event the last three years and sees the student-athletes enjoy it more and more every time.
For the incoming student-athletes, its a chance for them to be welcomed into the family, Fulton said. For the veteran student-athletes it really means a lot to share this experience with the new athletes. Each year it becomes more meaningful to them.
