Redbird Volleyball to Hold Tryouts

In a program with a long tradition of successful 'walk-on' players, Redbird volleyball coach Sharon Dingman is holding an open tryout for potential Illinois State volleyball players at 4 p.m. Wednesday in Redbird Arena. Candidates must be enrolled as full-time students at Illinois State University for Fall, 2003 and will be required to meet all other standards necessary to become Illinois State student-athletes. "We are looking for players who can help our team achieve its goals for the 2003 season," said Dingman. "We have had some people call and express an interest in trying out and we want to give them, and others, that opportunity." Over the past decade, the Redbird program has produced a succession of valuable contributors including Jill Cole (1992-96), Kathleen Fitzpatrick (1996-2000) and Jonna Burchett (1999-01). The Redbirds have an 11-player roster at the start of camp including three first-year freshmen. Illinois State begins its season Aug. 29 vs. Illinois at Redbird Arena in the first round of the Barker GMC Classic. Those interested should contact the Redbird volleyball office at (309) 438-2567 by Tuesday, Aug. 19.
