Over 130 new student-athletes were welcomed into the Illinois State athletics family during the third annual Walk of Champions Sunday evening.
During the ceremony, football player Boomer Grigsby and womens tennis player Liina Suurvarik were named 2002-03 Illinois State Athletes of the Year. For the newcomers, they were welcomed as Redbird athletes by taking a tour of the campus and athletic facilities, along the way learning a little history about the school and Illinois State athletics.
The new athletes sang the fight song, learned about the diversity of the campus, and were given a history lesson on many of the universitys buildings such as Hovey Hall, Cook Hall, Horton Field House, Hancock Stadium and Redbird Arena.
The newcomers have a lot to learn about our traditions and our pride and our enthusiasm, Illinois State Director of Athletics Perk Weisenburger said. This is one way to bring them together so they can meet each other and they can see the community support and the university support. This is a great showing of the Redbird spirit.
