Sophomore Matt Maskel and the Illinois State mens golf team each claimed first in the D.A. Weibring tournament at ISU Golf Course Monday. The Birds won by shooting 853, the lowest team score in the 11 year history of the tournament.
Building off Sundays lead, the Birds completed the task, defeating second place St. Ambrose by just six strokes and 14 strokes ahead of third place Northern Illinois.
Maskel fired a 209 to tie for individual medalist with Joe Demory from St. Ambrose.
Along with Maskel, the Birds placed three others in the top ten. Brian Anderson carded a 215 and tied for seventh, while Dustin Edwards and Kris Wildenradt shot 216 and tied for ninth. Kyle Vasel rounded out the team scores tied for 34th with a 224.
Competing as individuals, Denny Bull and Walter Brown (218) tied for 15th, Chis Eddy and Ryan Brown (222) tied for 26th, and Jason Kemp (232) tied for 59th.
Illinois States mens golf returns to action on Sept. 22 at the Kansas Invite in Lawrence, Kansas.
