The Illinois State womens tennis doubles pair, Liina Suurvarik and freshman Katri Miller, won the Mizzou Four-Way doubles championship Sunday.
Suurvarik and Miller came back from being down 4-7 to the No. 1 seed, Missouris Urska Juric and Katka Sevcikova, and dropped them in a tiebreaker, 9-8(7-4). For Suurvarik and Miller it was their first tournament win as a doubles pair as they dropped the Intercollegiate Tennis Association No. 9 ranked doubles team, Juric and Sevcikova.
In the singles finals, after winning the first set Suurvarik fell to the No. 1 seed Juric, 2-6, 7-6(7-3), 6-4. Juric holds a national-ranking of No. 27 by the ITA.
Head coach Chris Hoover felt the Birds showed a bright future in the tournament over the weekend.
In the singles match Suurvarik was evenly matched against her opponent, Hoover said. Katri played really well for her first tournament in college. Her and Suurvarik showed some great promise as a doubles team.
The Redbirds will get back to action when they travel to Tulsa for the University of Tulsa Invite on September 26th through the 28th in Tulsa, Okla.
