Anderson Sits in Second to Lead Birds After Day One

Senior Brian Anderson led the Illinois State mens golf team after firing a 141 in two rounds of play, placing him second after day one of the Kansas Invitational in Lawrence, Kan. Head coach Harland Kilborn was excited about Andersons efforts. Im glad to see Brian stepping up, he played really well today, Kilborn said. Now we need to get everyone else on board. Sophomore Matt Maskel (74-74=148) finished in a tie for 24th, while junior Kyle Vasel (77-75=152) tied for 51st. Senior Dustin Edwards (77-76=153) tied for 55th on the day, while Kris Wildenradt (77-77=154) rounded out the Birds in a tie for 64th. If we get a full team effort with all five guys clicking tomorrow, we still have a real shot at this tournament, Kilborn said. As a team the Birds are currently tied for eighth with Nebraska after clubbing a 594, just eight strokes behind third place North Texas (291-295=586). Leading the tournement is host school Kansas (287-284=571) followed by second place Wichita State (294-289=583). The Birds will finish the tournament Tuesday, Sept. 23 in the final round of play with a shotgun start starting at 8:30 a.m.
