Ben Cappuccitti picked up where he left off at the end of the Illlinois State mens tennis teams 2002-03 campaign Friday afternoon, as he recorded his first victory of the fall season at the Ball State Invitational, in Muncie Ind.
Cappuccitti defeated Todd Wojkowski of Toledo in the first round of A flight singles competition, 6-3, 4-6, 6-2.
Cappuccitti was also leading in his second round match with Erick Martinez of Northern Illinois, 6-4, 3-3, before the match was postponed due to rain.
Head coach Greg Kennett was very pleased with Cappuccittis performance this afternoon, and expects more success for him as the tournament rolls on.
Cappuccitti played very hard in his first round match, Kennett said. He was beating a very good player before the rain came, so hopefully he will be able to hold onto that lead.
Overall, the Redbirds won 10 out of 13 first and second round matches in singles competition and two out of four first round doubles matches.
The Birds return to the Cardinal Creek Tennis Center and Woodworth Tennis Courts for the completion of second round singles matches that were postponed due to rain and third round action, at 8 a.m. Saturday.
