Redbird Swimming and Diving Impress at Annual Red/White Intrasquad Meet

The White team posted a 186-170 victory in the annual swimming and diving Red/White intrasquad meet at Horton Pool. Several competitors won multiple events, in what head coach Steve Paska calls a good team effort. The White team was lead on the swimming side by the efforts of sophomore Monique Witkowski and junior Julie Cocks. Witkowski won the 200 freestyle, 50 freestyle and was a member of the winning 400 freestyle relay team. Cocks took the title in the 200 butterfly, 200 backstroke and 100 fly, while the combined efforts of the two, as well as Chelsea Sanders and Brittany Armstrong, recorded the fastest time in the 200 medley relay. Swimming efforts for the red team were led by Katie Finan, who won the 800 freestyle event, 100 individual medley and 500 freestyle. Terra Whisman lead the white team divers in the one-meter, scoring a 228.90. Krystal Featherston of the Red team took the three-meter title with a score of 256.28. Diving coach Carly Weiden liked the way her divers performed. I was very happy with how my team dove tonight, said Weiden. Everyone was consistent in their dives, and I was glad to see them attempting some dives they havent worked on in practice, and doing them well. Theyve all improved a lot from just the beginning of practice to now, and hopefully that will continue. Freshman Lisa Hanrahan recorded a personal best time in the 100 butterfly, with a 1:03.65, smashing her old mark of 1:11.90. Paska was impressed with the efforts of the entire team, and believes it was a good way to begin the season. This total team effort was a great way to start the year, said Paska. Everyone contributed tonight, and there are definitely positives the girls can take away. I saw a lot of things that we can build on in looking ahead to the Notre Dame relays and our dual meet against Ball State. The Redbirds return to the water for their first real competitive venture October 3 at the Notre Dame Relays in South Bend, Ind. The Ball State swimmers and divers come to Horton Pool October 17, for a dual meet slated to begin at 6 p.m.
