After falling in the Missouri Valley Conference championship by just two strokes last year, the Illinois State mens golf team begins the 2004 championship quest on Monday at the Fairway Club Invitational, which is hosted by Nebraska.
The Birds will tee off at 9 a.m. on Monday, then compete in a second shotgun in the afternoon. The competition will finish on Tuesday after one round of play that begins at 8:30 a.m.
This is a tough course, head coach Harland Kilborn said about Firethorn Golf Club. It will be a good test for our guys.
In theteams qualifying for the tournament, the competition between theBirds for the top five spots has been fierce.
Brian Anderson has been averaging around 70, and our number five guy has been averaging about 73, Kilborn said about the early qualifiers. We just need to carry that over into our meets.
The competition includes last years victor, Oklahoma City and Missouri Valley Conference teams Creighton, Drake, Southwest Missouri State and Northern Iowa. Other schools participating include host Nebraska, Akron, Army, Iowa State, Loyola-Marymount, Troy State, Texas-Pan American and Wyoming.
I am excited about this season, Kilborn expressed. The guys have been playing really good.
