The Illinois State swimming and diving team took full advantage of its winter break, traveling to Acapulco, Mexico, to train in the warm weather and compete in the Acapulco Invitational. The Birds returned from their fun in the sun, ready to face Illinois-Chicago in a dual meet Friday night.
Head coach
Steve Paska expects the meet to be competitive and is confident the training and practice time the team put in while in Acapulco will prove beneficial.
This is our first meet since our Christmas Break trip, said Paska. It will be a good opportunity for us to see how we compete, and where were at in our season so far. Meets with UIC have been competitive in the past and I expect this one to have some very close races.
The sprint events, especially, will be competitive, because their times in the 50 free, 100 free and 100 fly are very close to ours. Paska continued, Hopefully we can use our depth to our advantage and come away with a victory.
On the diving side, coach Carly Weiden expects a little extra competitive edge from her divers, as UIC diver Caitlin Carey has already qualified for the NCAA Zone Meet.
Competing against someone whos already qualified will give the divers a good goal, something to shoot for, and a litt extra push, said Weiden. Theyve been working very hard and transitioning wel. , I think everyone is excited for the meet.
Swimming and diving action gets underway at 7 p.m. Friday night, on the campus of Illinois-Chicago.
