Softball Media Day Set for January 27

Media Day for the Illinois State softball team will be held on Tuesday, January 27 at 3:30 p.m. in the Redbird Arena Press Room. Head coach Melinda Fischer and the 2004 captains will be available for comments at that time. Following Media Day, the team will be practicing in Horton Field House at approximately 4:15 p.m. Please RSVP to Softball SID Heather Freehill if you are able to attend. The 2003 Redbirds, regular season Missouri Valley Conference champions, finished last years campaign, 29-23. The Birds return thirteen letterwinners from last years squad, including All-Valley selections Lauren Bierwirth and Kate Stake. Illinois State softball has enjoyed an abundance of success over the years, becoming one of the most successful athletic programs in university history. In the past four seasons, the Redbird softball team has won three regular season conference titles and two Valley Tournament crowns on its way to back-to-back NCAA Regional appearances. Redbirds also earned MVP honors in three of the last four Valley Tournaments and during the last two regular seasons. Last season, Fischer joined the coaching elite by earning her 600th career win, becoming just the 25th college softball coach to do so. ISU softball opens its season at 1 p.m. CST on Friday, January 30 against Auburn in the Diamond Fun & Sun Classic hosted by Florida International University in Miami, Fla.
