Soccer Drops Conference Opener to Indiana State, 2-1

Despite Lauren Kahlenbecks goal at 42:45, the Sycamores of Indiana State were able to top the Birds, 2-1 in the conference opener. The Birds came out strong in the first few minutes of the game firing off two quick shots in the first eight minutes. However, the seven shots in the first half of play were not enough to top Indiana State as the Sycamores scored on a goal by Nichole Tiggs assisted by Lauren Podolski at 34:42. We came out and played pretty well today, said head coach Pete Kowall. We were given enough chances to score we just werent aggressive and technical enough at the right times. Eight minutes later, the Birds tied the game 1-1, with a goal down the middle by Lauren Kahlenbeck, her first of the season, assisted by Bethany Russ. The Birds went on to take several shots in the second half but were not able to score. The game was tied until the last few minutes when Lauren Podolski drove around the defense and scored on the left side of the goal at the 87-minute mark to put the game away for the Sycamores. The Birds out shot the Sycamores 7-4 in the first half and 12-5 in the second. Both teams scored great goals, but we didnt have enough of them to win, said Kowall. We lost on an incredible goal by Indiana State. The Birds now move to 5-4-1 on the season and 0-1 in the Valley. The Birds will continue conference play at 1 p.m. on Sunday as they take on the Purple Aces at Evansville.
