Vasel Tied For 17th at Kansas Invitational

Senior Kyle Vasel stayed atop the Illinois State mens golf team Tuesday at the Kansas Invitational on the Alvamar Golf Course in Lawrence, Kan., carding a 221 (73,75,73), tied for 17th place. Despite three great rounds from Vasel the Illinois State mens golf team only managed a 908 (301,302,305), in a ninth-place tie with Western Kentucky. Through the high winds Vasel continued to lead the Birds for the second straight day according to head coach Harland Kilborn. Kyle played real well Tuesday shooting a 73, even with the 25 mile-per-hour winds, said Kilborn. The course was set up real hard today making it even more difficult. Senior Denny Bull played solid golf firing a 227 (75,76,76), tied for 37th place. Rounding out the Redbirds top three was sophomore Matt Miller, who finished in a tie for 51st, shooting a 232 (80,76,76). Kansas was atop the leaderboard firing a team total 870, seven strokes ahead of second-place finisher Kansas State. The Birds did not play well as a team, according to Kilborn. Denny and Matt did not have bad scores, but we needed a solid fourth score, said Kilborn. Unfortunately we did not get it done. That is what it is going to take to make a move in the right direction. The course only gave up three sub-par finishes, including two, four-under finishes by Kevin Ward (71,72,69) of Kansas and Matt VanCleave (71,71,70) of Kansas State, both carding a 54-hole total of 212, tied for first. The Birds travel to Louisville, Ky., for the Cardinal Intercollegiate at the Cardinal Club Golf Course on Sept. 27 and 28 where Coach Kilborn plans on making some roster changes. I am looking forward to adding a few new players for Louisville, said Kilborn. I think this will help shake the team up and get our feet going to jump start things. ###
