Steady and consistent play from seniors Denny Bull and Kyle Vasel have put them at the top of an ever-changing line up for the 2004-05 Illinois State mens golf team heading into this weeks Cardinal Intercollegiate in Louisville, Ky. The tournament will take place on Monday and Tuesday at the Cardinal Club Golf Course.
Bull and Vasel have already posted two top ten finishes as individuals for the 2004 season. Head coach Harland Kilborn and the rest of the Birds have a lot of confidence in the consistent play from Bull and Vasel.
It is so important for those seniors to play solid and steady golf, said Kilborn. Their play gives a lot of confidence to the rest of the team that plays behind them. They know that their scores will always be good.
Other Redbirds traveling to Kentucky, include junior Matt Maskel, sophomore Matt Miller and Anthony Imburgia a sophomore transfer. Imburgia has posted some great scores in qualifying rounds including a 64 at the Den Golf Course in Bloomington Ill., a course record.
Kilborn feels that this line up is what it is going to take to have a successful season.
This is by far the strongest and most experienced line up that we have had so far this year, said Kilborn. This gives us more depth. I really feel that we are coming with a team that will be competitive.
The Birds will be in competition with Akron, Arkansas-Little Rock, Arkansas State, Austin Peay, Ball State, East Michigan, Marquette, Miami-Ohio, Mississippi State, North Carolina-Greensboro, Ohio, Oral Roberts, Tennessee-Chattanooga, Wyoming, Virginia Commonwealth, Woffard and host Louisville.
Competition begins September 27 at 8:30 a.m. with a 36-hole shotgun start with the last 18-holes on Tuesday the 28.
