Edwards Keeps Birds Close After Day One

Senior Dustin Edwards fired a 36-hole total of 144 (72,72) to lead the Illinois State mens golf team to second place following the first day of the D.A. Weibring Intercollegiate at the ISU Golf Course. Senior Kyle Vasel is tied for fifth place after carding a two-round total of 146 (70,76), while freshman Mike Imburgia shot a 147 (74,73), ending the day tied for seventh. Sophomore Ryan Brown finished Sundays rounds in 10th place shooting 148 (72,76). Illinois State entered two teams into the tournament. Edwards ISU White team shot 585 (290,295), three strokes off the pace. ISU Red followed closely in third, firing a 594 (293,301). Other Redbirds the top 20 were senior Denny Bull (73,76), and sophomore Matt Miller (75,74), both tied for 11th place after 149s. Jason Kemp (77,74), Anthony Imburgia (76,75) and Kurt Sroka (72,79) tied for 19th place after two round totals of 151. Illinois State had two golfers who competed as individuals and finished in the top 20 including junior Chris Eddy (77,74), and freshman Matt Imburgia (81,70), both shooting 151 for the day, tied for 19th. Head coach Harland Kilborn was impressed with the play of Matt Imburgia. You love to see Matt come back and turn his game around after firing a first round 81, said Kilborn. For his first collegiate golf tournament it is impressive to see his score get cut by 11 strokes, while most other scores were going up in the second round. Western Illinois shot a team best 582 (288,294) behind Dan Vojtas tournament leading two round total of 141 (68,73). Western Illinois is a team that will beat you if you shoot 300 as a team, said Kilborn. I am anxious to go out tomorrow and strike the ball good and turn the tournament around. Play resumes Monday at 8:30 a.m., for the final 18 holes of the tournament.
