After first day play at the RazorRacket Invitational forced Alban Renard and Tim Link into consolation bracket play, the two showed that they still belonged at the tournament.
Link and Renard both advanced to the championships of their respective consolation bracket flights. Link, a former Bloomington High School star, won a convincing semifinal match against Brian Bajema of Southern Baptist 6-2, 6-4 to advance to the B Flight championship. Link then had to face Adam Erlich of Oral Roberts in the final, but fell 7-6, 6-4 in a hard fought match.
After the B Flight championship, head coach Greg Kennett knew Link did his best.
Tim played extremely well in his first match, but just couldnt close the second one out, said Kennett. He got great experience today, though, and that is what we are here looking for.
Renard played just as hard in the A Flight consolation semifinal. Renard had the chance to face a Missouri Valley Conference opponent in his match, giving him much needed knowledge for their future match up in the spring, Renard defeated Carlo Contente of Wichita State 6-3, 6-0 to move to Sundays consolation final.
In doubles action, Djordje Uskokovic and Guillermo Gomez won their third round match against Tyrone Hill and Cuan Farquasen of Oral Roberts 9-7 before advancing to the semifinals. Felipe Diaz and Boris Kuharic of Oklahoma State awaited them in the semifinals, and the Birds number one doubles team had a chance to close out the match up three match points, but could not hold on and fell 9-8.
Renard will join teammate Oscar Beich for final day play on Sunday. Play starts at 9 a.m. with doubles play following the end of the singles flights.
