Illinois State placekicker Stephen Carroll was one of the 36 winners of the Seventh Annual Division I-AA Athletics Directors Association Academic All-Star Team Friday.
Carroll and the other winners were chosen from 86 nominees and were announced at the Division I-AA football championship in Chattanooga, Tenn.
In 2004, Carroll claimed the Illinois State career scoring record by finishing the season with 271 career points. The Redbird placekicker also claimed the school record for career field goal percentage with a 70.9 percent accuracy during his career. In the season opener against Saint Xavier, Carroll set the school standard with 86 consecutive PATs. Carroll carries a 3.52 GPA and is majoring in public relations. He is a two-time member of the Deans List and has been an AFNI Athletics Honor Roll member every semester at Illinois State.
Football players from all Division I-AA institutions are eligible for this prestigious award. Each of the 86 nominees were required to have a minimum grade point average of 3.20 (on a 4.0 scale) in undergraduate study and have been a starter or key player with legitimate athletics credentials. He must have reached his second year of athletics and academic standing at the nominated institution and have completed a minimum of one full academic year at the nominated institution. He must have also participated in 50 percent of the game played at his designated position.
Carroll is the second Redbird to be named to the team in the last four seasons joining former Illinois State linebacker Adam Waugh, who was selected in 2000.
