Illinois State Redbirds Prepare for Akron Invitational

As the semester comes to an end for the Redbird swimming and diving team the most anticipated invitational comes to a head, one the Birds have focused on since the beginning of the 2004-2005 season. The Redbirds travel to Akron, Ohio December 3 to spend the weekend in competition. Since the beginning of the semester, I have emphasized the challenge of this meet and how we want the athletes to produce their best times and scores, said Paska. I want the girls to rise to the challenge as they compete against stellar competition. Teams competing in the invitational include Akron, Ball State, Ohio, Buffalo, Clasion, Duquense, Hiram, Tulane, and Xavier. Paska feels that the Akron Invitational has seen some changes since the past three years he has traveled to Ohio. Going from past experiences, the meet seems to be getting faster and faster in the swimming aspect, said head coach Steve Paska. These teams are quality teams, Akron has always set up a smooth invitational. Head diving coach Carly Weiden feels the divers are well prepared. The athletes have been practicing hard not only the dual-meets this season, but also for the Akron Invitational, said Weiden. They are mentally prepared for this trip and will bring a positive contribution to the team and strong competition to the entire field of divers. The invitational kicks off at 11 am Friday morning with the first competition held at the Ocasek Natatorium on the campus of Akron University.
