Johnson, Redbirds Add 17 on Signing Day

Illinois State head football coach Denver Johnson announced at the Kaufman Football Building Wednesday that 17 student-athletes signed National Letters of Intent to continue their education and football careers at Illinois State as members of the 2004 Redbird recruiting class. We are really excited about this group, Johnson said. Its not a large class after coming off a relatively small senior class. The size of the senior class determines your recruiting capital, which you use to go out and bring in the next freshman class. Although its not as large as some of the classes we have had (in the past), we feel like it is an extremely talented class. Some 16 high school, two junior college and three four-year transfer products inked with Illinois State, including two players who signed during the mid-year signing period and are already attending classes at Illinois State, as part of the 21-man recruiting class. Johnson is pleased with the balance of the class. We achieved some balance with a couple of junior college guys in there to fill some immediate needs, but we feel like weve made another great investment in our future with extremely gifted athletes, Johnson said. By position, the Birds added six linemen to the roster, which includes three defensive linemen and three on the offensive side. Rounding out the Redbird newcomers are four defensive backs, three quarterbacks, two tight ends, two running backs, two linebackers, one wide receiver and one H-back. Johnson is impressed with the overall stature of this class. This is a gifted class with a lot of speed and athleticism, Johnson said. We have some height in the class and it has been our focus to improve our stature over time and we have taken another step towards that. Johnson also recognized the hard work and determination of his assistant coaches. My staff has done another outstanding job with this recruiting class, Johnson said. The guys just did a great job and had a great team effort, which is a tribute to their dedication to the program and each other, as a staff.
