Dana Almdale recorded the game-winning goal to seal a 1-0 Illinois State victory over Dayton in the Purdue Spring Soccer Tournament on Sunday in West Lafayette, Ind.
Illinois State lost to Purdue, 2-0 and tied the Carmel Heat, a club team out of Carmel, Ind., 1-0. Goalkeeper Andrea Shaw saw all of the minutes in goal for the Redbirds, allowing just two scores.
Head coach Pete Kowall was pleased with his teams performance in the tournament.
This was a good experience for our team and a good first step towards the 2004 season, Kowall said. We only have 15 players right now, so our freshmen saw a lot of time this weekend. It was a great chance to play a lot of different teams in a big arena.
Illinois State will participate in three more tournaments this spring. On March 27 and April 3, the Birds are at home and they play at Illinois on April 10.
