Sharp-Shooting Shockers Beat 'Birds

Trey Guidry led all scorers with 16 points for Illinois State, but it wasnt enough to prevent a balanced, sharp-shooting Wichita State from beating the Redbirds 70-50 in a Missouri Valley Conference basketball game Wednesday at Redbird Arena. The Redbirds, 6-13, 2-9, shot a season-low 29.8 percent from the field Wichita State, 14-7, 7-4, made 10 of its first 15 second-half shots to build a 20-point lead in the first 11 minutes after halftime. Rob Kampman led WSU with 14 points. Aaron Hogg added 11 and Paul Miller had 10. Marcus Arnold was the only other Redbird in double figures with 11 points. WSU made 18 of 21 free throws, including 15 of 17 in the second half. ISU was 11 for 17 from the free throw line. WSU had a 38-29 rebounding edge behind six by Jamar Howard and Miller. Greg Dilligard led Illinois State with ll rebounds. The Redbirds turned the ball over just 10 times in the game, but the Shockers converted those to 15 points. Making 8 of 15 three-point shots, Wichita State won for only the third time in 16 tries in Redbird Arena and just the sixth time in 24 games in Normal. WSU took an early 15-6 lead on the strength of a pair of Rob Kampman three-point shots. A trio of Trey Guidry treys helped Illinois State bounce back to 18-16 with 8:51 left after a 10-3 run. ISU chased the Shockers the rest of the half before trailing at halftime 27-20 when the Shockers scored the last two baskets of the half. Guidry had 11 of Illinois States 20 points at intermission. The Shockers started the second half hitting its first five field goals to stretch the lead to 41-27 lead in the first five minutes as the Shockers began to pull away.
