Alfredo Lagarda went undefeated in singles competition last weekend at the UNLV Invitational, and looks to continue that momentum when the Illinois State mens tennis team (4-5, 1-0) faces Northern Illinois Friday, in Rockford, Ill.
Lagarda picked up wins in the No. 6 singles spot over UNLVs Marko Blagogevic 3-6, 6-3, 6-2, and Southern Mississippis Thomas Funke, 6-0, 6-2. Lagardas singles record for the season now stands at 9-9.
Head coach Greg Kennett feels that Lagardas solid play is one of the reasons the Redbirds have continued to improve as the season progresses, even without the services of two of the teams top players due to injury.
Lagarda really helps make us a very deep team, Kennett said. Even though we have been without (Ben) Cappuccitti and (Ben) Pettinari at times we have still been able to play well.
The Birds match with Northern Illinois is set to start at 3 p.m.
